RE-ELECT

LARRYMcCABE

Experienced leadership
for what comes next.

I care about where Stratford goes from here. We need more homes, a downtown that thrives all year and a plan for The Grand Trunk we can actually afford. I’m running again because these decisions will be with us for decades, and I want to help get them right.

OCTOBER 21 · STRONG MAYOR POWERS · PART TWO

Strong Mayor Powers.
What Comes Next?

The first post explained what these powers could mean for Stratford. The next question is what we do about them: delegate eligible powers where the law allows, put our adopted procedural bylaw to work, and ensure major decisions are properly debated and explained. Ask every mayoral candidate which powers they intend to keep.

Strong Mayor Powers: What Comes Next?

The powers are here. Now comes the practical question: which decisions should go back to council or the CAO, what does Stratford's adopted procedural bylaw mean in practice, and how do we protect open debate and independent oversight? Part two builds on the original scenarios and sources.

More votes, a smaller share — and what that could mean for the mayor's race

At noon on Monday, 2,602 ballots had been cast: more than the 2,532 reported on Day 4 in 2022, but a smaller share of eligible voters. The reporting times differ, so this is not yet a matched-hour trend. Two graphics explain the numbers, possible final turnout and what a five-person mayoral race could mean.

Behind the scenes: your potato

A little mid-campaign levity, with Fiona keeping me grounded. Very grounded, apparently.

Stratford Cares: housing, homelessness and support

My full responses to Stratford Cares on homelessness, housing instability, mental health and addiction — including permanent supportive housing, rent assistance, a proposed revolving housing loan fund and clear responsibilities for each level of government.

Downtown Stratford at dusk

We have to think these things through together.

If we want more housing, we need the water, sewer and streets to support it. If we build something, we have to be able to run it. And if we want to keep taxes manageable, we need to be honest about what comes first and what can wait.

WHY I’M RUNNING

Nearly thirty years building here. One term at the council table.

I grew up in Stratford and came home in the late 1990s to build a life and a business. Nearly thirty years downtown has taught me a fair bit about change, about taking a chance and about knowing what you can afford. Those lessons come with me to the council table.

I ask questions. I want to understand the consequences. And I’m quite prepared to change my mind when there’s a good reason. What I owe you is a clear explanation of where I stand and why.

The questions I keep coming back to

Before we commit public money, I want us to be able to answer a few fairly straightforward questions.

01What does it really cost?

What will we pay to build it, borrow for it, run it and look after it over the years?

02Who carries the risk?

If the funding or partners don’t come through, how much could taxpayers be left to cover?

03How does it operate?

Who will run it, and how will the bills be paid once the doors are open?

04What will have to wait?

Money committed here is money we can’t spend elsewhere. We need to be clear about that.

Come talk to me.

I’m at 1 York Lane, behind Pazzo, Thursdays from 5–7 p.m. Drop in with a question, an idea or something you think I should hear. You can also send me a note.
